There are many encryption softwares out there, and one of the latest additions to the technology market is ProCryptum. ProCryptum is designed to encrypt items that you send over the internet such as documents, images, etc so they cannot be accessed by unauthorised persons. The application uses Qt library for the GUI and Botan library for encryption. ProCryptum is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows XP/7/8 and Mac OS X. We test out ProCryptum on our Windows 7 64-bit PC.
* Fast bzip2 compression algorithm compresses all data
* Automatic 256-bit encryption using 1 of 3 ciphers: AES (Rijndael), Serpent, or Twofish
* Choice of 4 block cipher modes of operation: Cipher-Block Chaining (CBC), Cipher Feedback (CFB), Output Feedback (OFB), Counter (CTR)
* Message authentication code ensures data integrity and prevents data corruption
* Full text search and replace functionality
* Pre-set defaults for optimum operation and security
* Plain text editor
* Attachments panel with drag and drop functionality
* Export directly to PDF
* Undo/Redo buttons
* Written in C++ for maximum performance
ProCryptum opens into a format that is similar to most Microsoft products such as Wordpad. Select the paper clip icon to open the attachments pane and add files, click the disk icon to save and encrypt the file and export to pdf by selecting the acrobat reader icon.
The encryption settings can be changed by navigating to Edit – Preferences. There are several ciphers to choose: AES (Rijndael), Serpent and Twofish. There are also four modes of operation available: CBC (Cipher-block chaining), CFB (cipher feedback), OFB (output feedback), and CTR (counter). The default settings on ProCryptum are AES for cipher and CBC for mode of operation.
We type out a message (this is not necessary though) and add attachments to the application for encryption. To start the encryption process, select the ‘save’ icon.
We then navigate to the folder where we want to save the encrypted file and click ‘Save’.
We enter in an encryption key
After we have sent this to the client via email they download and access the file through ProCryptum. They are prompted to enter the key to decrypt the file.
Note: The end user must have ProCryptum installed on their computer to be able to decrypt the file
For any assistance with ProCryptum, the developer’s have a list of known issues which is accessible via their ‘Contact Us’ page or, you can contact them directly via email.
ProCryptum is available to trial for 40 days with all features. You can still use ProCryptum after the 40 day trial but its functionality will be limited. The full version of ProCryptum is US$19.99 per license which provides you with 2 activation keys – one for yourself, and one to give away (i.e. your client receiving the encrypted files).
ProCryptum is an extremely easy to use security application that encrypts files using industry standard encryption algorithms. This software would be beneficial for businesses who want to send confidential documents to clients (and vise versa). The program is so simple to operate that we recommend it for any level of computer user. Grab it now!
