How to decrease the size of or disable System Restore in Windows 7

If you want to free up hard drive space on your computer, you can either decrease the size or disable System Restore from Windows 7.  However, disabling System Restore is not recommended as you won’t be able to restore your system if it crashes.

Procedure

Click StartControl PanelSystem and Security

1_Disable_System_Restore

Select System and then click on System Protection

2_Disable_System_Restore

The System Properties dialog box opens. Select your System disc from the list under Protection Settings and click the Configure button.

3_Disable_System_Restore

Disable System Restore

Under the Restore Settings heading, choose the radio button option Turn off system protection. Click OK to continue.

4_Disable_System_Restore

A warning message box appears requesting confirmation that you wish to turn off System Restore. Click Yes.

5_Disable_System_Restore

Decrease the size of Disk space usage

Under Disk Space Usage, lower the maximum disk space usage used for system protection (minimum is 1%) and click OK to continue.

6_Decrease_amount_of_System_Restore
