Summary:

GoodSync is an exceptional synchronization and back up tool. It comes equipped with innovative features and a friendly interface. Highly Recommended.

GoodSync effectively ‘syncs’ and backs up files through peer-to-peer file syncing solution to multiple computers and cloud based services. After simply configuring a job profile, your personal documents can automatically sync at scheduled times without further user interaction. The application is compatible with Windows (XP/Vista/7/8) on both 32-bit and 64-bit, Android 2.1 and higher, iOS 4.3 and up and Mac OSX 10.5 and higher. For our review, we test out the Windows version of GoodSync.

Features (Windows v. 9.5.7)

* True Bi-Directional Synchronization
* One-Way Synchronization Provides an Easy Backup Solution
* Deletions Are Propagated
* Chained Synchronization for Multiple Devices
* Lightning Fast Speed, Low Memory Requirement
* Syncs not just Windows folders but also FTP, WebDAV, SFTP, S3
* Selective File Synchronization: Exclude and Include Filters
* 64-bit version, not just 32-bit
* Portable Paths for Removable Drives

Interface

After installing GoodSync, we run the program and are immediately prompted to create our first job. We enter in a Job Name and can select what job type we want (Synchronize or Backup). For our example, we want to test out the synchronize process so we select this option. Click OK to continue.

GoodSync-New-Job

The GoodSync main interface opens with the Job (Reports 2013) tabbed. We now need to select the left folder we want to sync across.

GoodSync-Job-Browse-1

In the ‘Left Folder’ dialog box, we are presented with a list of places you can sync files or folders. For our example, we select the Projects folder located on the Computer.

We then select ‘Browse’ on the right hand side and navigate where we want to sync the contents to. This time it is to a folder on Google Drive. We select ‘Go’.

GoodSync-Right-Folder-Google-Drive-Go

We follow the relevant prompts to allow access (as from the example shown below).

After the access request is completed, the following message should appear in your web browser.

We then select the ‘Reports’ folder in our Google Drive and click OK.

On the GoodSync explorer interface, the folders have now been selected and we have to analyse if the connection is fine before attempting to sync.

GoodSync-Reports-2013-Analyze

Since the analysis showed no issues, we can now perform the sync operation. Select ‘Sync’.

The files from your left folder (Projects) have successfully synched to your Reports folder on Google Drive. Excellent!

Set the sync time

What happens if we do not want to have to manually sync the files every time? Well, we can set it to auto! Select the ‘Auto’ button on the bottom of the interface.

GoodSync-Job-Schedule-Time-Auto

We decided to make the files ‘sync’ everytime we make changes to a document and to have it sync periodically every six hours. We click Save to continue.

Done!

Support

GoodSync have an entire section on their website devoted to Support. There is a variety of information that can really be of help for people who are not computer professionals. This includes a user manual, tutorials (accompanied with detailed screen shots) and Frequently Asked Questions. If none of these options contain the assistance you require, you can  submit a question to the developer’s directly on their website or even contact them directly by phone at one of their business locations (US and Japan). Although this may be exceptionally pricey if you do not reside within these countries.

Cost

GoodSync is free to trial for 30 days for Windows, Mac and Android. For Windows, the full featured product costs US$29.95.

Final Thoughts

GoodSync is a reliable application for people who prefer to sync their files across multiple devices but want it done with minimal interaction. Once the job is set up to sync on a schedule, then no further configuration is required. Although some computer rookies may have difficulty when first configuring the software, it is relatively easy to master. We advise that if you are experiencing problems to check out the Support section on GoodSync’s website.  The trial for GoodSync is available for download from here.
